Most portable reflectors

This portrait of my good friend and fellow photographer, Sjoerd Booij was taken while we were out shooting for my Midnight Rabbit series (flash) not too long ago. After shooting several scenes we fit in a quick portrait before calling it quits. For the Midnight Rabbit series I only use the available light so I didn’t have lighting with me so we looked for the strongest light around and found it in a storefront. I was planning on shooting with the light shining directly on him but while determining the softness and direction of the light using our hands we saw that it was also reflecting off Sjoerd’s hands onto his face. That was the eureka moment! The most portable reflectors are your own hands, we’ll the models hands.

This diagram shows the setup (did my best on editing in some hands)

This is what we came up with in the end, so using the one light and both Sjoerd’s hands we suddenly had a three light setup, with the storefront light to the rear left as a rim light, his right hand as a main and his left hand as fill.
